Diese Diskussion ist weithin als Schmutz- und Schunddebatte bekannt. Zum besseren Verständnis meiner Arbeit muss dieser Begriff eingeschränkt werden. Die Thematik ist zwar unter dem Schlagwort der Schmutz- und Schunddebatte bekannt, jedoch wird in der Fachliteratur weitestgehend auf Schund, additionally ästhetisch und "sozialmoralisch Schädliches" (Jäger 1988:173) eingegangen. Schmutz hingegen wird eher als "sexualmoralisch Anstößiges" (ebd.) verstanden und im Zusammenhang mit den Diskussionen um Pornographie behandelt. Dennoch ist festzuhalten, dass das Entstehen von Schmutz und Schund in der Literatur simultan stattfand und daher den Oberbegriff dieser Debatten rechtfertigt. Zentraler Gegenstand der Diskussion struggle die Frage, welche Literatur und Kunst zugelassen werden durfte, ohne moralisch anstößig und für die Bevölkerung schädlich zu sein. In der Kritik standen vor allem Werke 'niederer' literarischer Qualität, wie die massenangefertigten Kolportagen- und Heftchenromane . Im Rahmen der allgemeinen Industrialisierung gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bildete sich auch in der Literatur eine immer stärker ausgeprägte wirtschaftliche Orientierung heraus (vgl. hyperlink 1). Hierdurch sahen sich viele Intellektuelle veranlasst, einen Werteverfall in der Unterhaltungsliteratur festzustellen und sich für den Erhalt hochwertiger und anspruchsvoller Kunst einzusetzen.
